St Marys Island and coast path, Tyne and Wear
Description
An easy, occasionally bracing, walk to a lighthouse reached over a tidal causeway. It's a popular tourist attraction, as are the seals who live here.
Details
GPS coords to North car park: 55.0688, -1.4527 What3Words: ///pushes.lifted.caked Two car parks, both P&D. South car park has access to the sandy beach and the England Coast Path. North car park has the WCs and the decommissioned lighthouse/visitor centre on St Mary's Island. Both car parks are on the same road and aren't that far apart. There's a walkway with seating for long views of the sea. Entry charge to lightouse. Note - we've had reports that the WCs are not usable this year (2024). Updates appreciated if you are able to let everyone know.
Walk
Follow the well-worn trail out to the lighthouse. You'll need to be aware of the tide movement so you don't get marooned on the lighthouse. Dogs need to be on leads because this is a nature reserve and the seal pups are very vulnerable.
