Scenic dale dog walk with two dog-friendly pubs, Derbyshire
PremiumDescription
This walk is an idyllic linear stroll through one of the most scenic of the White Peak dales, with dog-friendly pubs at either end of the walk! It's 4 miles each way, 8 in total which is a bit longer than the other walks - but with a tasty lunch or tea and cakes at the halfway point this walk always seems a lot shorter!

Green 28 PointsFantastic walk! Starts (grid ref SK157664) in meadows, then a 'Lord of the Rings' limestone gorge, then a pleasant riverside track, food available in Over Haddon, then walk back. Wonderful.

A walk of two halves
I used tolive in Over Haddon and know this walk well and revisited it recently. The top part near Monyash is great and open, a nice dale.
The wooded centre part is a pleasant wooded walk.
As you approach the bottom end it doesn't become less pretty - indeed the part that is terraced to form trout hatcheris is truly lovely - howvere the bottom part is no longer dog friendly.
Much of the river has been allowed to "go back to nature" (ie overgrow so you can't see it) and, as it's an area of special scientific interest dogs have to be on a lead.
I am not doubting the scientific interest bit but I feel the lower portion of the walk is no longer a patch on what it was and such wonderful water deserves to have a dog splashing in it as they used to.
Won't be returning
