Opal coast dog-friendly beach, France
PremiumDescription
If you like quirky historical factoids, Wissant deserves a moment of your time. It used to be an important harbour for cross-channel voyages, including the Romans starting their invasion of Britain in 55BC. The story goes that Henry III of England was once stranded here with no readies to pay his way home. The same Henry later caused mayhem in the port by ordering the embarkation of a fully-grown elephant. Somehow the elephant survived its channel crossing and became a popular attraction in 13th century London. Roll on 800 years, and workers at a gravel quarry just west of Wissant dug up a complete mammoth skeleton, tusks and all.
