M6 Junction 42 River Eden dog walk and pub, Cumbria
PremiumDescription
Fantastic walk along the river bank, with a lovely dog-friendly hotel bar to return to. A walk experience for drivers and dogs that's a bit of a superior motorway walk, and worth a visit for the day if you happen to staying in the area.

Green 20 PointsLovely Walk and pub lunch
This was a lovely village with cafe and pub and walk along the river. Charlie loved it especially the walk through wooded edge of the river. Had fish chapatti at the Crown.. Well worth a stopover .

Green 35 PointsLovely walk
A particularly nice walk on our way from the Highlands to South Wales! Very pretty village and the river and woods are ideal for dogs on a warm summer day. It's easy to park and pick up the walk in any direction really, and go for half an hour or much longer

Pink 154 PointsVisited March 2010, really nice walk along the river. There is a coffee shop just up the road from the hotel and also the post office/shop sells a good range of snacks, hot drinks and wines should you fancy a picnic. 99 steps are all repaired now. For satnav/gps users 54.88260455, -2.832914293 will take you to the street between the coffee shop and the hotel. If you are towing a caravan you may want to park further up the road near the green as there is not much scope for turning and the road ends at the station car park which is quite small.

Green 39 PointsThis is indeed a fabulous walk. The 99 steps were being repaired when we went but the alternative route (uphill from the pub, left and left again) was fine. The pub was lovely and the food very good. No dog biscuits though!

My top walk of the site. It's a fabulous walk whatever the weather, and Walton's Bar is one of those magically friendly places.

Lovely lunch stop
We missed the path to the village green and instead went over the railway bridge and walked the other side of the river - still a lovely quiet walk! Imagine it might be trickier in wet weather as it could get quite muddy and in places the slope is quite steep. Stopped for a coffee at the post box cafe on the way out, which was lovely, and then at Walton's bar for lunch on the way back. Very dog friendly, limited menu but excellent food. Portions were huge, so don't expect a light bite!
