The start point for the dog walks is a handsome, if severe looking, Dales market town with an unusually large green. At one time the town was a centre for the lead-mining industry, and families worked at home as hand-knitters. You get the feeling from the buildings that you'd need to be tough and resilient to have lived here in the 18th century.
