A62 Exit 6 Damazan doggiestop, France
PremiumDescription
A small town with a choice of two excellent walking routes along the canal, and a number of small shops and cafes nearby for snacks and refreshment.
The brightly painted houses in the town are a delight, and apparently it's a local law that each house has to maintain its original colour scheme so the town could have looked like this for centuries. It is old, and the tourist info office told us it's known as an arcaded 'bastide' - very roughly a 'new' town built in the 12-13th century as part of an effort to repopulate the countryside after the Cathars had been wiped out by supporters of the pope. The pope's forces won - but fruit, grains and vegetables were in short supply until the newcomers had got agriculture going again.
