The splendid Château Royal de Durtal completely dominates the Loir river and dates back to the 11th century when it was the stronghold of Fulk the Black. The castle acquired respectability and prestige over the years and is now part conference centre, wedding venue and stylish B&B. Entrance is by guided tour with advance booking only, so not very practical for drivers - but you can certainly enjoy the view of the outside.
