A1 Holy Island, Northumberland
PremiumDescription
A mysterious almost-island steeped in history, and a must-see on the Northumbrian coast. Its history goes back to the times of Saint Cuthbert, piratical Scandinavian raiders and a defense point ever since. The so-called castle was originally a sea fortress. In the 1910s it was transformed into a holiday home (seriously!) for the owner of Country Life magazine by Lutyens and the garden by Jekyll.
