A visit to Hexham with the dog, Northumberland
Description
Avoid this one in peak tourist season, but definitely try for a stop here at quieter times of the year. The town has plenty of dog-friendly shops and a surprisingly large park just behind the centre.

Walk
From the car park walk up the steps, past the public loos, and this brings you to the imposing old gaol building - one of the first in England and constructed in the 1300s. Back in the day it must have been an ogre of a building. Carry on towards the Shambles and cross over to the Abbey. Apparently the earlier abbey was built with stones re-purposed from the Roman town just up the road and the pillars and arches can still be seen in the crypt. Behind the church is the park, and this is clearly popular with local pooches - there are loads of dogs!
