About Choccybarplease
I’m new to dogs...got my first one two years ago, and since then 3 more! So 4 dogs and 2 cats here. Two of the dogs are rescues from Romania and Bosnia, and they are a delight. Such different personalities between the 4 dogs, each has their fault, I have an anxious barker, a lead puller, one that wants to see inside, and an escapee. We spend lots of time together because I work from home, so looking for new local walks.

Sea Palling dog-friendly beach, Norfolk
Relaxed place to take your dogs to a beach
Lots of dogs, lots off lead, chilled atmosphere. I think if you come here with dogs it is expected that there will be some dashing about. Easy parking, basic shop supplies. You can walk for miles towards Winterton. A little way along the road opposite the car park is a ‘behind the beach’ walk which takes you through woods and fields to Horsey. Much more interesting than the beach so it’s good to do it as a circular and include fields one way, beach the other. Best of both worlds, with fish and chips or doughnuts at the end!
Beacon Hill dog walk near Loughborough, Leicestershire
Fabulous circular walk, now with tearoom!
A new addition to Beacon Hill Lower Car Park is a dog friendly cafe. I didn’t try it, as the owner of 4 young dogs I’m just not that brave yet! But we did enjoy a fabulous walk up to the beacon, where, with it being the highest point in Leicestershire, you can see for miles and miles. Lots of other dogs and their humans, wide smooth paths, and plenty of opportunities to wander in woods. My photo is a bit blurry, but it was rather windy!
Bagworth Heath Woods dog walk, Leicestershire
Avoid the crowds at Bagworth Heath
What I love about this place is that you can pull up alongside the entrance and your dogs are seconds away from woods, open spaces, hills and lakes. There’s a wide tarmac path that meanders quite a distance, and lots of opportunities to go off in different directions. If you follow this path to its end, you leave Bagworth Heath and enter a different wood, but at some point you’ll have to turn back as it’s not circular, unfortunately. Also wish there was a cafe! If you do meet other people with dogs, they are likely to be off lead.
Reservoir dog walk, Leicestershire
Bigger than it looks!
Thornton reservoir has two car parks. It takes about an hour to walk round, and this includes a bit of road walking, for about 5 minutes. I have given it 4 stars for this reason, as I have a traffic reactive dog, so we can’t do the full circuit. There are opportunities to leave the main path to enter woodland and fields . There is a very small kiosk for emergency chocolate bars and crisps, also the toilets are here. It can get very busy, with kiddies on bikes, and pushchairs, but if you choose the right time it’s a beautiful walk.
Ratby dog walk in the forest, Leicestershire
Woodland & safe, enclosed fields
Park up in Martinshaw Car Park on Markfield Road, then take the path that’s perpendicular to the road. Keep your dogs on a lead here, as you’ll pass over the M1 and it’s very loud. Carry on a few metres after you’ve left the bridge and you’ve a choice- go through the gate to the left and into the woods, or stay on the path and veer right into the fields. The woods have wide paths and lots of cross- crossing paths, and you can wander for ages. If you’ve taken the route to the fields, notice the period gates keeper cottage ahead to your left and cross diagonally through this field . You’ll find yourself at two enclosed fields, the one on the left is much quieter as it’s further from the motorway. After a safe play here, head back to the cottage but turn right into a lovely field with a dip in the middle. It takes you into the woods, take the track to the left and you’ll be able to work your way back to the car park, in an anti clockwise direction.
Nature reserve dog walk near Leicester, Leicestershire
Off lead countryside walk 5 mins from M1 junction 22
Despite living nearby for 22 years, I had never heard of this nature reserve! Thanks to this website, I’ve just visited it with my 4 dogs. Safe car park , poo bag bins, plenty of space for a run around, and a nice circular wander that took us 35 minutes. Some great views at the top of the hills too! Will definitely go back as I want to explore the paths that go off from the main fields.
National Forest dog walk near Ratby and dog-friendly pub, Leicestershire
Peaceful and varied walk for off lead enjoyment
We spend many a happy hour at Ratby Burroughs! It’s possible to park near the Plough, and walk along the track that leads to Thornton and the Ivanhoe Trail. You’d need your dogs on lead here, but there are many footpath signs that take you away from the track. We tend to park in the car park, which is about a half mile along this track. From there, you can wander for ages through fields and woodland. Lots of grasses for snuffling in. If you’re super fit, you can even follow the track on foot as far as Thornton reservoir, around the reservoir , and back again but bear in mind there is a stretch of road , about a quarter of a mile, with no pavement between the end of the track and the start of the Thornton reservoir circuit. We’ve not tried the pub yet.
Worth a visit if you do the circular walk
The first time I visited Market Bosworth Country Park, I wondered what all the fuss was about. A small lake, large fields, a bit of woodland. No fencing to separate the road from the park, which concerned me, families with kids on bikes that luckily my dogs avoid. The second time, I lived it. I just brought one dog, a hoop obsessed one, and generally just showed off about how focussed and we’ll behaved my dog was. I also took the circular path which takes you through a bit of woodland and into a less neat environment. I parked on the road nearby, so didn’t pay for parking .
