Local Dog Walk: Wheatacre Woods, Lancashire
Description
Off-lead walking through young woodlands at Wheatacre Woods in Burtonwood, just 1.5 miles from junction 8 of the M62. Part of the Mersey Forest and Bold Forest Park, the 44 hectare Wheatacre Woods is a mix of woodland, ponds and grassy areas. The site is very quiet compared to nearby walks at Clock Face Country Park and Sutton Manor Woodlands, so ideal for more nervous dogs. Dogs can be off-lead from the car park.
Details
GPS coords for car park: 53.4294, -2.6635 Free parking is available in the car park on Gorsey Lane for the Burtonwood Community Centre, playground and playing field. As you enter the village you'll see the playing field on the left and Gorsey lane is just before it. Turn left here and the car park is then on the right. There is a good network of paths suitable for prams and pushchairs too.
Walk
Take either of the bridges over the stream that lead off the left hand side of the car park. Follow the path to the right.
Stay on this path, passing the large pond on the right till you reach a T junction. Turn right here and follow till you reach the road.
Either turn round and retrace steps or follow a smaller path to the left to skirt the boundary of the site which then rejoins the path half way back to the T junction.
Retrace steps here, past the pond (now on the left) to the obvious tree break on the right. Turn right here and it circles back to the starting point. (Takes about 30 - 40mins)
If you have Google Maps, it shows the paths very clearly.
