Five Arches dog walk, Kent

Some pub opening times and dog rules are still changing. Please check your chosen pub is able to welcome you before making plans.

Description

Large park area with woodland and river, great for cooling dogs (and owners!) off in hot and sunny weather. Just need to be aware of the Swans on one part of the river but you can walk your dog(s) in a circular route all off lead. Watch for picnicer's in summer, it can get very busy, especially around the bridge area.

Details

Small car park of Rectory Lane (be careful, it's a small lane with passing spaces and very busy at school pick up times). Can also park on the other side of the Meadows on The Grove / The Spinney, accessed from North Cray Road, A223, in quiet residential streets. White Cross pub is nearby and dog-friendly

Walk

A selection of possible walks of varying lengths, and depending on which side of the Meadows you start from.  We generally walk along the river between the 3 bridges, takes about an hour to amble along and do the full circuit, with a few stops for water / talk to other dogs.

My walk from The White Cross Inn

The pub had an adequate, dog friendly space in the car park. Not a garden, but fake grass and picnic tables. It does the job and the staff are friendly. They kindly let us stay parked there after our coffees and we walked 5 mins, starting on Water Lane next to the pub, to the river (past a farm shop). The bridge in the picture would be a further 30 mins walk from this end which we didn't have time for, but there is a pretty clearing and bench a couple of mins further on. The river is slow, clear and shallow so perfect for a pet paddle! There's also a kids play area on the other side of the river easily accessed by bridge as you reach the river. A pleasant break in our journey, thanks.

I walk this park most Sundays and the dogs love the walk following the stream from a small bridge at one end of the park going past the 5 arches bridge and if you keep going you will reach another little bridge over the stream and can walk back on the other side. At one end of the park there is an enclosed childrens play area. There is also woodland if you follow the path from the 5 arches bridge up to the woods. There is parking at the top of the park or if you turn down a side turning off of the North Cray Road it is possible to park on the side road. The park does not have any toilets or refreshments but there is a good pub in the North Cray Road that allows dogs and does food.
