Lots of easy and beautiful walks from the village. Also visit Castle Howard ( dogs on leads) and The Yorkshire Arboretum (dogs off leads in certain areas under close control) OS Explorer Map 300 Howardian Hills and Malton.
Turn left from the Crown and Cushion and walk as far as a No Through Road turn on the left, Water Lane. Go down here, pass a dog bin, and the lane gives way to become a bridletrack. Keep straight on and you'll get to woodland (half-a-mile to here). For a 30 minute walk you could turn round and go back the way you came.
For a longer 3-mile walk, keep going through the trees until you reach a path on the other side of the woods. Turn right, walking on a path with the trees on your right and open ground to the left, and heading gently downwards. After about 10 minutes you'll reach a place where paths meet and radiate outwards. You want the bridlepath - it's the middle one and continues to go downhill. After a while you'll meet a stream (or beck). Cross this and go on a small way until a right turn just before another beck. Turn right here to walk the length of 3 small fields on a gently rising path. Meet a track and turn left. This is where you started out, so just carry on and return to Welburn.
