Exit the car park via the five bar gate on the opposite side of the car park from where you drove in. It is a flat scenic walk along the Sett Valley Trail, part of the Penine Way, for roughly one mile,
Just past Birch Vale Reservoir (on the right), is a footpath cross roads with sign post. Take the narrow path on the left, signed to Chinley four miles via Moorland Road. Please remember to close this gate behind you (too many walkers leave safty gates open).
At the top of the path is the A6015 at Birch Vale. Moorland Road is directly opposite. It is unmistakable. An unmade, private, virticle road, do not be put off by this.
Keep going up hill until your path is blocked by a wooden gate and fence. Pass through the gate onto the moor. Sheep graze here and so dogs must be kept on a lead.
Walk straight ahead. It is grassy underfoot but there are ruts in the path caused by farm vehicles and bicycles. Keep the Derbyshire dry stone wall on your left. Enjoy the spectacular panaramic views.
Where the wall sweeps around the corner to the left, follow it left. The down hill walk here can be unpredictable underfoot so take care. The first gate takes you off the moor and into a small cops of trees. The second gate is to the rear of farm buildings with an old mill on the right. This mill ruin is a public acess and makes a good backdrop for photos.
Follow the path to the left of the farm building, it passes across the front of the farm house and out of the five bar gate. The footpath then crosses two fields with views out toward Hayfield Village.
After the second field, at the style turn right onto a concrete covered private road going down hill. The path from the style to the lane is rough so take care, especially if wet. Follow this lane onto Ridge Top Lane, Hayfield.
You will come out oppiste The Kinder Lodge, Marmalade Coffee Shop and Station Road Car Park. Congratulations, you have completed a 3.8 mile walk.
