Description

As the quarry has dug deeper over the years, the displaced earth has created a nature reserve with fantastic views over the working quarry. There is no car park or any facilities, but it's still well worth a visit, and you can enjoy at least an hour of off lead fun in a variety of landscapes including trees, fields, hills, water.

Details

GPS coords for start of walk: 52.5700, -1.2434  As you leave Huncote, passing over the bridge and heading out onto Croft Hill Road, there's a blink and you'll miss it access point to the nature reserve. A couple of cars can squeeze here, but it's also possible to park on the road. There are more access points as you drive around the quarry perimeter, but sadly no car parks.

Full Walk Details

Park at the entrance that's on the left just past the bridge after leaving Huncote. There's a good sized track ahead leading you along the base of the hill where you'll pass wetland on the left. After a while you'll see steps on the right, you can take these for a short cut to the viewing point but I prefer to continue along the path which becomes duckboards at wetter points. You'll come to a bridge over the river on your left hand side, at this point take the path away from the river and up the steep hill. Veer right at the top of the hill, and follow the path to the viewing point, which gives amazing views of the quarry.  From here, there's a choice. You can follow the path to the left and climb up the second hill, or you can take the steps back down to the starting point. We took the hill option, and were rewarded with amazing views of Leicestershire. All in all, we were out for about an hour and a half at a meandering pace.
