From centre of Minehead follow road opp. WHSmiths _Blenheim Rd past old hospital to first on left Martlet Rd., up the hill around hairpin bend at war Memorial and keep going past St Michaels church bear left follow road for 4 miles , look out for lots of Exmoor ponies and Red deer( Great views over the channel to South Wales, in good weather)this road was made for tank practice during WW2 )until you can go no further -large car park. Looking out over Porlock Bay you will see a path directly in front of you , take this down for only 50 yds. here is a sign bearing left to THE CROSS carry on down this path until you reach a gate marked Allerford Woods, go through the kissing gate and walk down only 50yds and the view opens up across Porlock vale towards Horner and Dunkery Beacon. Right behind you is a 50 ft wooden cross, from the plinth you will see the woods cut back in a diamond shape, this was for the workers and Ackland family to have services at certain times of the year. From this point you can go off in three different ways on circular paths. The woods here are busy with Red and Roe Deer . From the start of this walk there is a easy access trail leading into the woods on the left it is well signposted and there are at least three other walks from this main point. * watch out for ticks in the middle of summer if your dog goes off into the Bracken!!!
