A303 historic market town with walk and dog-friendly inn, Somerset
TA11 7LX
Description
Before we stopped here, I had no idea that this small town is the source of the county name of Somerset and was the capital of historic Wessex. So expect to be surprised by some impressive buildings around the Market Square, and especially look out for the large church, the Buttercross in the market place and the many buildings dating from around the 15th century. You'll find a number of cafes with outside tables in the summer where dogs are welcome, and the traditional inn is dog-friendly inside.
Details
Dogs are welcome in the bar and outside areas. Parking in nearby Half Moon short stay public car park free. Long stay car park - free. Another car park is P&D. Parking free after 5pm. Pop-up bakery at the pub.
Full Walk Details
The walk starts by the railway bridge and returns to the town centre past the White Hart. So wherever you start from it's an easy route to follow. From the railway bridge take the pathway signed for West Court, and do admire the almshouses on the left. Walk on Station Path with the rail lines on your right side and when this track bears to the left, don't go that way but carry on through a field. Leave the field down a flight of wooden steps and turn left onto Polham Lane. Pass the entrance to Bedlands Gate Farm, and shortly after this turn left onto a footpath through a metal walkers gate. This is a clear track and will lead you over three fields - the second field is huge. Then bear left to cross a field diagonally, there is a yellow footpath arrow, and emerge onto Pesters Lane over a step stile. (Take care, we found a temporary fence across blocking the way, and signs of cows halfway down.) Turn left, over a small roundabout, and continue on Pesters Lane as far as a set of steps on the right. Go up these and the path will bring you to School Lane. At the end of this turn left and walk forward onto the Market Place and the White Hart. To get back to the Half Moon car park just carry straight on.
