Walking holidays with your dog

Posted on Sunday, 21st February 2010 - 2:20pm in Articles by Lezli

If you enjoy a good day's walk with your dog, why not take a dog-friendly walking holiday? From a weekend to a fortnight or longer, pass through new landscapes each day. It's possible to base yourself in one place and make daily forays out and back, or you can try a linear walk where each night you stay in a new village.

UK Exploratory is a small company in the UK that specialises in organising self-guided walking holidays. We make all the arrangements for you and then you enjoy the walk under your own steam. Dogs are welcome on all of our UK trips. We offer several routes such as the Coast to Coast, West Highland Way and Pennine Way footpaths and routes of our own devising in the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales.

As walkers know, some paths are easier than others, and this applies equally to dogs. Stiles and rocky steps can be tricky for some dogs, particularly those with shorter legs or with less confidence in their agility. Each of our routes is different and we advise about likely challenges.

We book your dog-friendly accommodation each night, whether in a friendly B&B, an inn or a small hotel. Your dog sleeps with you in your room and is never put in a kennel or yard. We give you detailed route cards and maps so that you can follow the route, plus plenty of local information. We can also take your luggage from stop to stop, to reduce weight to carry, and this is particularly useful for the dog's kit.

Happy walking!

MOTORWAY WALKS - The Book

With nearly 200 walks from the Driving with Dogs website, this handy little book is an ideal guide to the best dog-friendly pubs and dog walks within 5 miles of UK motorway exits. Like the website walks, you'll also find information about campervan access, disabled facilities, kids' activities, safe parking places, sat-nav codes and written route directions too.

Driving with Dogs is working with the Border Collie Trust GB to bring you the Motorway Walks book at £9.99 (plus p&p). Every book sold will include a donation to the work of the Trust. Jem, the collie who has tested all the motorway walks, is a Border Collie Trust rescue and we're delighted that donations from the book he inspired will go back to helping the Trust with their work.
